Summer is Storm Drain Stenciling Season!
Well, if it's dry enough...) Read below for more information and
we'll have our stenciling kits available for you to borrow.
The Task Force is armed with stencils and ready to mark storm drains
in order to remind people that all runoff affects salmon. Most storm
drains in our region drain to salmon streams, local lakes, and Puget
Sound.
Washing cars rinses not only soap but petroleum products,
heavy metals, and sediment down storm drains and into local salmon
waters. Fertilizers, pesticides, and pet waste from lawns can enter
streams through storm drains.
People often use storm drains as a
dumping ground for household hazardous wastes. These wastes can
last throughout the summer until the rainy season washes them down
the drain. Labeling storm drains helps prevent deliberate dumping
into and around storm drains. It also serves as a reminder that our
daily activities affect salmon. The stenciled signs ensure that people standing on the sidewalk think about salmon for at least a
few seconds of each day.
Now is the time to stencil storm drains in
your neighborhood. The pavement is dry, and the sun is a more
frequent companion. Organize a group of neighbors or a group of your
children's friends. Storm drain stenciling is summer fun for ages
8-80. Urban, suburban, and rural areas all need to be stenciled.
Contact Cara Ianni at (425) 252-6686 or via email at cara@stillysnofish.org to arrange for a stenciling party. We can provide everything you
need including stencils, paint, and orange safety vests. Individual stenciling crusaders and storm drain
armies can both be accommodated. We can also suggest areas to
stencil or help ensure that you have permission to stencil from
the appropriate municipality.
