About the Task Force

The Stilly-Snohomish Fisheries Enhancement Task Force is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, registered as a charitable organization with the Washington Secretary of State. The mission of the Task Force is to ensure the future of salmon in the Stillaguamish and Snohomish River and Island County watersheds, a combined land area of more than 2,400 square miles. Since its beginning in 1990, the Task Force has directed its resources and energy to the challenge of developing community partnerships and strategies to improve and restore the recreational and commercial fisheries of the Pacific Northwest.

Position Overview : The Corpsmember will be part of a 6-person team working to perform environmental restoration and habitat enhancement projects. Corpsmembers construct projects with a combination of manual labor and power equipment. They work 40 hours a week for twelve months of service and receive a minimum wage, an education award, and medical benefits. Corpsmembers receive formal training sessions as well as extensive on-the-job training.

This jointly-sponsored non-profit crew, based near bus routes in the heart of Everett, meets at the Stilly-Snohomish Fisheries Enhancement Task Force to assist their salmon restoration and educational mission. The other half of our time is with Stewardship Partners, focusing on their Snoqualmie Stewardship Program, which restores habitat on farms and private property located along the Snoqualmie River and its tributaries.

Duties include: site assessment and preparation, salmon habitat restoration, stream bed restoration and installation of in-stream structures, plant native trees and shrubs, identification of Western Washington native plants, GPS surveying, invasive species removal, power tool use, leading volunteers, working with tribal natural resources, and community outreach. Being a member of this crew is a great way to gain experience with a variety of non-profits as an integral part of their labor and logistical team.

Start: By October 6, 2008 - 12 Months full time (40 hours per week) through September 25, 2009.

Compensation: $8.07 per hour; $4,725 SCHOLARSHIP in return for at least 1,700 hoursof work, that may be applied to student loans or college tuition; INTEREST DEFERMENT on existing student loans; and MEDICAL INSURANCE. Also eligible for FOOD STAMPS. On-the-job training in salmon habitat restoration, project development and coordination, environmental education, volunteer coordination, monitoring, and other job-related skills such as GPS/GIS experience, and exposure to both the technical and political processes of salmon recovery conservation.

The Crew Members duties will include:

  • Perform salmon habitat restoration, site preparation, and maintenance : removal of invasive plants manually or through the application of herbicide; haul, place and plant native trees and shrubs; spread mulch, install fencing and other browse control; may assist with development of projects, work with organic farmers to harvest produce.
  • Monitor restoration sites : may include vegetation, habitat, or stream surveys.
  • In-stream restoration projects : assist with placement and cabling of large woody debris and replacement of culverts.
  • Community Outreach : Crew members may assist with volunteer coordination and community education at events.

The Task Force and Stewardship Partners are committed to ensuring that the WCC member leaves this program with skills and experiences useful for future job opportunities. The WCC member gains a basic understanding of salmon and their habitat needs; how science, politics and community interests merge; and how different agencies and organizations are approaching salmon recovery.

Qualifications: Candidates must be 18 to 25 years old at the time of hire. The ideal candidate is a natural science graduate or a person with an interest in on-the-job experience. We are seeking an independent worker who is an articulate, self-motivated leader, and is people and team-oriented. A willingness to work outside in inclement (as well as fantastic) weather, and on rough terrain, is essential. Applicants must be U.S. citizens.

The ideal candidate for this position is a motivated natural sciences or environmental education graduate or near-graduate that is looking for on-the-job experience. Experience in environmental/science education, field biology and/or habitat restoration a plus, please detail these experiences in your application. The Task Force is seeking an articulate, people-oriented, self-motivated leader who is both an independent worker and a team player. A willingness to work outside in all types of weather and on rough terrain is essential. Basic computer skills including email, word processing and spreadsheets.

Job Description: The Volunteer & Outreach Assistant will focus his/her work in three areas:

Volunteer Coordination, Education and Outreach for all ages, focused on merging habitat restoration with community participation and environmental education (60%):

  • Lead or assist with volunteer coordination during salmon habitat enhancement projects, including riparian restoration, native plant salvages, invasive plant surveys, river and beach cleanups, and salmon carcass distributions.
  • Assist with teaching a salmon habitat restoration curriculum designed to meet Washington Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALR’s).
  • Provide classroom and field-based lessons to students and community groups throughout King, Snohomish and Island Counties on subjects including Pacific salmon, watershed ecology, native plants and inquiry-science.
  • Perform outreach to landowners to educate them about knotweed, a noxious weed, and engage them in its control.
  • Attend fairs and festivals to recruit new volunteers to the program.

Salmon Habitat Restoration , including project design, coordination, implementation and monitoring. Projects may include in-stream restoration, large wood placement, erosion control, culvert replacement, riparian revegetation, site maintenance, invasive plant survey and control using GPS/GIS technology, salmon carcass distributions, river and beach clean-ups, and wetland enhancement. Monitoring may include stream and riparian habitat assessment, photo-point, water quality, macroinvertebrate, and vegetation monitoring, as well as training and coordinating volunteer monitoring teams. (30%)

Participation in the Political Process : Attend any or all of the three Salmon Technical Advisory Groups (TAG) and the policy forming bodies in which the Task Force is involved. These include the Stillaguamish and Snohomish River basins, and Island County watersheds. If s/he is interested, they may focus their attention on nearshore habitat, attending and representing the Task Force at Island County TAG meetings, and Snohomish County Marine Resources Committee meetings, and contributing to meeting discussions on program development, potential restoration activities, and collaboration between organizations. (10%)

The Task Force is committed to ensuring that the WCC member leaves this program with a set of skills and experiences useful for future job opportunities.  RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Finances

  • Maintain financial records (with QuickBooks Pro software)
  • Process accounts receivable and accounts payable
  • Process monthly payroll and all Quarterly L&I taxes
  • Reconcile bank accounts
  • Project cash flow
  • Coordinate financial reporting for grant and contract reimbursement
  • Track and oversee equipment purchases and inventory
  • Manage tracking of donations
  • Prepare monthly financial statements and financial reports to Staff, Committees, Board of Directors, Grantors and Cooperators
  • Work with Executive Director on budget development and tracking
  • Coordinate preparation for annual IRS 990 form

B. Human Resources

  • Maintain financial records for medical and dental insurance and retirement plans.
  • Management of paid time off, sick pay, and holiday pay system.
